Our Vision
The Center for Dispute Resolution at San Luis Obispo College of Law is the product of efforts by community partners, mediators and volunteers working together to restore local access to free and low-cost conflict resolution services. As a branch of Monterey College of Law, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the new center represents an opportunity for a sustainable future for community mediation, built on the commitment and dedication of more than three decades of experience.
Our Mission is to provide education, training, and accessible conflict resolution services in the San Luis Obispo region, ensuring that individuals, families, and organizations in San Luis Obispo County have access to constructive pathways for resolving disputes—empowering our community to communicate, collaborate, and heal.
Launching the Center
After California passed the Dispute Resolution Programs Act in 1986, Creative Mediation became San Luis Obispo County’s long-standing provider of free and low-cost services, offering conflict coaching, community mediation, and small-claims court support. With Creative Mediation closing suddenly in 2025, the county faces a significant gap in these essential services. The Center for Dispute Resolution was formed to restore, and strengthen, this community-based work.
Rooted in community partnerships, the Center for Dispute Resolution at San Luis Obispo College of Law brings together the academic foundation of the law school and the long-standing local impact of Creative Mediation, formerly a program of Wilshire Community Services.
Building on decades of trusted service in the region, this collaboration unites experienced mediators, educators, and community leaders to expand access to conflict resolution education and affordable mediation services. Together, we are creating a sustainable hub for training, outreach, and community peace-building in San Luis Obispo County.
Our Work in the Community
The Center will support individuals, families, and organizations through the following core initiatives:
Education & Training: Workshops, clinics, and skills training for students, professionals, and community members.
Mediation & Facilitation: Accessible services for families, neighbors, organizations, and community groups.
Outreach & Partnerships: Collaboration with local municipalities, schools, colleges & universities, nonprofits, courts, and local agencies to expand access and impact.
